The Future Retail Market for Electricity – Creating Benefits for Danish Energy Consumers

The Supplier-centric model – a consumer-centric market design – is a reality. The core of the new design is to put the consumer at the centre of the market and to stimulate competition and innovation of new products and services to the consumers. From today, consumers will only receive one bill for electricity and have one point of contact to the electricity market through the supplier.

The new market design is one of the biggest changes to the Danish electricity market since its liberalisation in 2003. The reform was decided by the Danish parliament in 2012. During the past three years, Energinet.dk (Danish TSO) has through close cooperation with market players and authorities made the necessary changes to market rules and IT systems. The Danish DataHub – a central IT platform facilitating all information exchange and business processes between retail market players – plays a vital role in making the new market design possible.
The new market design is part of a transformation of the Danish electricity retail market. Datahub and a consumer centric market design are enabling the possibility to release the potential of engaging consumers in the transition to a greener energy system. Together with the new market design, regulated prices are being phased out. Additionally consumers get easier access to own consumption data and comparison tools, and can now decide if independent third parties should be granted access to their data. Approximately 1.8 mio. Danish consumers have a smart meter installed (100% before 2020), and the next step is to enable billing based on hourly meter values and prices.
Transforming the Danish retail market is an important step in enabling innovative electricity markets in support of a greener energy system and to the benefit of consumers and society.
