Climate change and the loss of biodiversity are two intricately linked and reinforcing challenges facing our planet and societies. Across the world, biodiversity and climate are mutually dependent. We cannot solve one without the other, and we must direct our concerted efforts to meet considerations of both.

Why is securing biodiversity a global challenge?

Biodiversity, the variety of living species on Earth, including plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi, is rapidly capturing interest among investors, policymakers, and leading corporations. It is a shared global challenge. Biodiversity is a prerequisite for healthy ecosystems that sustain food systems, medicine, clean air, and quality water. Fifty percent of global GDP is highly dependent on the increasingly declining biodiversity. Never in human history have species disappeared at such a rapid rate as now.

Growing solutions for biodiversity through public-private partnerships

Biodiversity is high on the agenda for leading Danish businesses, regarding biodiversity as a strategic aspect of business operations. Denmark has a long way to go regarding biodiversity, but faces the challenge with a core belief in collaboration – the private sector is part of the solution.

Handling biodiversity loss requires assessments of local contexts and collaboration with local partners, suppliers, and authorities throughout value chains. It underlines the need for a collaborative approach and public-private partnerships to ensure the sustainable use of biodiversity and halt and reverse nature loss. The Danish Biodiversity Partnership is an example of how corporations can impact the legislative framework and identify barriers to the green transition in collaboration with the government.

Making an effort to reduce biodiversity impacts can secure market access and social license to operate for businesses in a political environment where biodiversity and ecosystems are subject to increasing public and political attention. With new technologies and innovative use of AI, businesses can help understand ecosystems and ease the demanded reporting. Lowering negative impacts on biodiversity can unlock financial opportunities and mitigate significant business risks, such as raw material scarcity, natural risks, and reputational damage associated with the loss of biodiversity, holding large potential for companies across sectors.
