How can business models, digitalisation and partnerships enable a circular transition?

The widespread adoption of circular business models among companies accelerates the transition to a circular economy as it serves to reduce resource consumption and waste generation. Policymakers and regulators have a role to play in paving the way for the adoption of circular business models. In turn, businesses and industries that adopt circular business models can support the transition by achieving efficiency gains through higher resource and economic productivity, reductions in CO2 emissions, and new opportunities for jobs and prosperity.

In many cases, realising circular business models are enabled using data, digital tools, and design, which is also very much in focus in the EU. Strengthening reporting practices, setting up digital product passports and supporting data sharing infrastructures are all central, as information about product design and material content, quality and origin are necessary inputs to evaluate whether a product can be better designed, repaired, reused, recycled, or needs to be maintained.
