Denmark: Fossil Fuel Subsidies Should be Eliminated

In Rio de Janeiro, ministers from Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Denmark decided to intensify the struggle to phase out the support for fossil fuels.

Rio+20 conference sends an important signal

Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Buildings, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, says the Rio+20 conference sends an important signal to the world’s countries that holding down the price of fossil fuels is problematic. The ”Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform” alliance has caught the signal and will now do their outmost to convince the rest of world’s countries that subsidizing fossil fuels is ruining the climate as well as the economy.

IEA: Subsidies for fossil fuels are increasing

The International Energy Agency (IEA) claims that USD $409 million was used to hold down the price of fossil fuels in 2010. They estimate that the number will reach USD $600 million this year.
